For the birds

Female Cardinal

Female Cardinal

This pretty lady is a female Cardinal. She and her mate visited my backyard feeder a few weeks ago. Cardinals have been some of my favorites for years but I was never able to get a picture of a female. Did you know that in spring, male Cardinals will mouth-feed females to gain favor with them? I’ve seem them do it – it’s adorable.

I have many more backyard visitors than I ever had at our old place.  I’ve updated the Birding photo gallery with about 20 new pictures.  I hope to provide more as I spot more birds!  Spring is just around the corner also and I hope to get a lot closer to them.  I’ve read that Chickadees in particular are more apt to get close to people.  I’ve even seen some eating out of people’s hands!

If that ever happens, I’ll be sure to post a picture of it!

If you’re interested in feeding your backyard birds, some good information can be found here at the Cornell website.

Am I too morbid?

January26

While driving down Ocean Parkway one day, I caught a glimpse of something off the side of the road.  I was going by too fast to see what it was and I kept passing it on a weekly basis, but never remembered to slow down to get a better look.

One morning, I decided to wake up before dawn to take pictures of the sunrise.  I figured I would finally find out what this mystery object was on the side of the road, and get some good shots of the sunrise over the ocean.

Over the dune, I found an odd collection of broken fishing gear, plastic bottles, buckets, sneakers, clothes, and driftwood.  But I found something that surprised me even more - a heavy wooden cross with a man’s name on it.

Who was this man?  Were these discarded objects a shrine to his memory?  Is he really buried under the sand, or was he lost at sea?  And am I morbid for being fascinated by this and taking pictures of his final resting place?

What I do know is this – that the placement of his cross is no accident.  It is turned so that it faces each new day as the sun dawns.  Whoever put that cross there loved him enough to give him an eternity of sunrises.
