Tobey the African Grey

Tobey the African Grey Parrot

Tobey the African Grey Parrot

One night late last summer, I was home gathering my things together for a work trip the next day. I had forgotten my water bottle in the car and walked outside in my slippers to get it. I was walking back to the house when I heard, “Hello!” coming from behind me. I froze. I don’t live in a dangerous neighborhood but it was after 10pm and I was a little spooked.

When I turned, I realized that the source of the greeting was parrot sitting in a bush. An African Grey parrot, to be precise. I walked over slowly, expecting the bird to fly away at any second. He didn’t move and I said, “Hello?” and he greeted me again, “Hello!”. I offered my forearm to him and he climbed right on. I lowered my forearm until he was sitting on my shoulder and I walked, very slowly, back to the house.

NYBG – New York Botanical Gardens

April27

Ah the NYBG. One of my favorite places to spend a day.

For years, I’ve said I was going to make it to the NYBG in the Bronx for spring. Cherry trees, tulips, daffodils… Yet each year, something happens and I never make it. Mostly it’s due to the 7 birthdays, 2 anniversaries and 1 holiday between April and May. And the free time on the weekend? Usually raining. Like last weekend. And this weekend.

This year, I am determined. I have a day off next week and I’m going to try to make the most of it. Since the whole garden isn’t in bloom, it shouldn’t take that long to tour the spring bulbs, magnolia/cherry trees, the conservatory, and maybe do some bird watching in the forest.

As always, I’ll post the photos in the GreenGallery. You can find last year’s visit and the year before in there also.

Wish me luck!
